Funded Project: Travelling Concerts
The Orchestre des Ambulants is a young organisation that brings musicians together around a shared goal: to bring classical music to those who are no longer able to travel. Founded in 2024, the orchestra stands out for its commitment to reaching out to older people (who are sometimes isolated or living with a disability), performing in care homes and residential care facilities with the same artistic rigour as in major concert halls.
Concerts to rebuild social connections
The Concerts Ambulants project stems from a simple observation: many elderly or frail people are no longer able to access cultural venues. The project therefore aims to reverse the usual approach by bringing the music to them.
Inspired by the principle of an orchestra tour, the project involves classical music concerts in care homes, particularly in non-profit nursing homes, which are treated as fully-fledged concert halls in their own right. The musical ensembles will be tailored to the venues and repertoires, ranging from chamber music to symphony orchestras.
The Travelling Concerts will consist of four concert series in four different regions, reaching a wide audience of older people. These will take place in the North, in Royan, in Burgundy and in the Vosges. A total of 18 concerts will be organised. Residents, their relatives and care home staff will be able to share this experience together.
Expected outcomes
● Promote access to culture for older people living far from traditional venues.
● Break the isolation of older people through shared, community-building experiences.
● Foster intergenerational connections between residents, families, care staff and musicians.
● Provide sensory and emotional stimulation through classical music.
● Promote care homes as genuine cultural spaces.
➤ By supporting the Concerts Ambulants project, our Foundation reaffirms its commitment to cultural initiatives that reach out to older people, create opportunities for intergenerational sharing and help improve quality of life within care homes.
