Who are you? Tell us more about the association you sponsor.
I'm Laetitia, a gift management coordinator at Damart, and I've been a sponsor of the project for a year. The concept is simple: senior volunteers read stories to children in daycare, preschool, elementary school, and middle school. There are several objectives:
– to combat illiteracy
– to develop children's imagination, critical thinking, and curiosity
– to create connections between seniors and children
Of course, the seniors have been trained to read aloud, manage a group, and adapt the readings to different age groups.
Why did you want to become a sponsor?
I'm proud and grateful to have sponsored this project. First, I love reading, and I love it more and more. It has many benefits; it's a fantastic educational tool, especially for enriching vocabulary and grammar. Moreover, it fosters strong interactions. This project itself creates intergenerational bonds: I am convinced that the generations have much to offer each other.
What's beautiful here is that the children's sincerity meets the wisdom of the elders.
Were you able to experience it firsthand?
Yes! I had a day of immersion and I was struck by the strong commitment and dedication of the volunteers to their roles. You can really feel the pleasure they derive from it and their desire to do a good job. I was able to attend a reading for first-grade students: I loved seeing all the joy and enthusiasm in their eyes, which is also shared by the teachers who support this project after seeing the benefits for their students. In fact, everyone benefits and grows from it!
