Association: Friends of Myrtle Park

Improving the availability of parks and recreational opportunities for older and less mobile residents and increasing mobility, fitness, and well-being. Myrtle Park is a park in two parts. The upper part features flowerbeds, play equipment, tennis courts, and is accessible to all. The lower part is a meadow that runs alongside the River Aire and offers long-distance views of the forest and countryside. This area is less accessible to older people or those with mobility issues because, although a sloping path leads to the meadow, until recently there was no seating. The Friends of Myrtle Park have received numerous requests from older people and families for seating and picnic benches to be installed in this part of the park.
Supported Projects: Enjoyment for All
2024 –
The second and final part of our 2023/2024 project focuses on enhancing the well-being and enjoyment of older and less mobile residents by renovating and decorating the remains of a low wall (formerly a wading pool). This will create space for three picnic benches, one of which will be wheelchair accessible.
An accessible picnic area will facilitate family and intergenerational activities. It will also allow the Friends of Myrtle Park to host outdoor events for older residents.
2023 –
Seating will be installed to allow seniors and those with mobility issues to access the views of the river and woods, attend events and games in the meadow, and take long walks knowing there will be a place to sit if they become tired. The remaining wading pool wall will be renovated and decorated, and three picnic benches will be installed, one of which will be wheelchair accessible. This will create an attractive picnic area adjacent to the river and accessible to all.
UPDATE: Thanks to this funding, eight benches have been installed around the meadow and along the river. This has allowed seniors and those with reduced mobility to take longer walks knowing there will be a place to sit if they become tired. The installation of benches has directly contributed to improving the health and fitness of seniors.
